Leeds United now face a fight from Scottish Premier League club Hearts to sign Cardiff City forward Warren Feeney, BBC Radio Leeds understands.
The 28-year-old Northern Ireland international travelled to Leeds on Wednesday for contract negotiations.
However, these could now have stalled due to Hearts' interest, while Grimsby Town are also after the striker.
Feeney already has experience of playing in the SPL after spending last season on loan at Dundee United.
"Cardiff have given permission for another club to sign me. Leeds United are a massive club and I am excited," he said.
The striker did not make a competitive first-team appearance in his first spell at Leeds before leaving in 2001, subsequently playing for Bournemouth, Stockport County and Luton Town before joining Cardiff.
606: DEBATEBut he has only started five league games for the Bluebirds, spending time also on loan at Swansea City.
Feeney has won 31 full international caps for Northern Ireland, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather.
Leeds United's first-team coach Glynn Snodin is also assistant to Northern Ireland boss Nigel Worthington.
