Branston has no regrets over move

Guy Branston

Former Kettering Town captain Guy Branston says that he has left the club on good terms with the supporters.

The 30-year-old has signed for Burton Albion, having at one stage been lined up to join Torquay for £18,000.

Branston told BBC Radio Northampton: "I had a lot of games at Kettering that meant a great deal to me, and I've tried to leave on good terms.

"Clubs are always going to be bitter when a player leaves. All I want to do is play in the Football League."

The club have issued a statement that says a clerical error by the club allowed the move to happen for free.

It read: "Following several incidents last season, the club was forced to agree that Branston could leave this summer, providing 50% of a £40,000 release fee in a lucrative contract extension Branston signed midway through last season was met.

" Are you sorry to see defender Guy Branston leave the club? "

"We eventually agreed a deal worth £18,000 with Torquay United.

"Unfortunately, it transpires that a former employee did not use the correct paperwork for the contract extension or check the FA had accepted the amendment.

"Branston has chosen to not honour the terms of the contract extension".

The defender has insisted that he has to look after his own interests.

"I've done nothing wrong, as I've moved as a free agent," Branston said. "It was a clerical mistake within the company.

"I didn't want to cause a fuss. I come and go from football clubs but I've said thanks to the fans and they're the big thing for me."
