Hibs sign up Jones from Grimsby

Grimsby defender Rob Jones Hibernian have confirmed the signing of 26-year-old defender Rob Jones from Grimsby Town for an undisclosed fee.

Easter Road manager Tony Mowbray said: "Rob is a player we have been watching over the course of last season and we are convinced of his quality.

"Rob is 6ft 7in and has many qualities already, including good technique.

"He also has plenty of potential to improve as a player and Rob's personality embraces this as he is very motivated to be here."

Jones was delighted to have signed a four-year contract with the Scottish Premier League club.

"It's a big step for me and I am delighted with the opportunity to be part of a big club with such a rich heritage," he said.

"I told Rob what Tony could add to his game"

"I hope to make a real difference to the squad, improve as a player and hopefully help the club progress."

Jones' two seasons with Grimsby, having arrived from Stockport Town, ended in disappointment when they missed out on automatic promotion from League Two on the final day of the season.

They also surprisingly lost the play-off final to Cheltenham and then suffered another blow when manager Russell Slade moved to Yoevil Town.

Grimsby have promoted assistant Graham Rodger, whom Jones has credited for his progress at the club.

But Mowbray's reputation helped Hibs persuade him to move to Scotland.

Agent Kevin Smith said: "Tony has done a fantastic job so far in his time at Hibs and Rob was attracted by that.

"I told Rob what Tony could add to his game.

"One thing he has never had is defensive coaching on a daily basis to the standard Tony can offer. Rob has a tremendous amount of potential."

Mowbray is seeking new defenders with veteran Gary Smith having moved to Cowdenbeath and Scotland international Gary Caldwell joining Celtic.
