Russell Latapy says the chance to help Trinidad and Tobago reach the next World Cup was too good to turn down as he prepares to quit Falkirk.
The 40-year-old has been given Bairns boss John Hughes' blessing to join Francisco Maturana's technical staff.
And the move is likely to be finalised in the next few days, ending the midfielder's 10-year stint in Scotland.
"It's a good opportunity, especially at the moment, with a chance to get to another World Cup," he said.
"I've always felt that there is a lot I have to offer in a coaching capacity.
"I knew from a very long time ago that I wanted the opportunity to manage my national team. That's the highest level you can manage.
"It's an opportunity for me to come back home and be involved in local football as well.
"I've spent five to six wonderful years at Falkirk, but the job at hand now is the national team""I can see players and hopefully get them to the national team, improve their game and try my best to raise the whole standard of football in the country."
Latapy came out of international retirement to help the Soca Warriors to the World Cup in Germany in 2006 and has set his sights on taking part in another finals, this time as a coach.
"Hopefully I can come in and provide the spark that helps get us there," said the midfielder, who is contracted to Falkirk until the end of the season and has also played for Hibernian, Rangers, Dundee United and Porto.
"I have to be fully committed to getting us to the World Cup.
"I've spent five to six wonderful years at Falkirk, but the job at hand now is the national team."
Latapy has travelled to the Carribean to finalise details on his new coaching role.
Falkirk head coach John Hughes has described Latapy as one of the most gifted players he has worked with.
"It's a full-time post and he'll be leaving," said the Scottish Premier League club's boss. "He's been a wonderful asset. I can't speak highly enough of him.
"I'm sure our supporters will wish him all the best. They have many memories."
Earlier this season, Falkirk held a special 'Russell Latapy day' at their match against Hibernian to give both sets of fans the opportunity to pay tribute to the player as he turned 40.
