Craig Brown and Billy Davies have emerged as possible candidates to form a management team at Dundee.
The Dens Park club are without a manager following the departure of Alex Rae on Monday.
Former Motherwell and Preston boss Davies has been out of management since leaving Derby County last November.
During Davies' time at Pride Park, former Scotland manager Craig Brown had a spell as a football consultant for the English club.
Brown, who has also managed Clyde and Preston, was part of the Dundee side in 1962 which won the First Division title, then Scotland's top flight.
It is believed that a foreign coach is also on the Dens Park shortlist, with the club having received over 40 applications for the job.
Other names mentioned in connection with the post include Airdrie manager Kenny Black and former Welsh internationalist Leighton James.
"The amount of people that have applied for the job is quite incredible. There are some big names"Speaking on Radio Scotland's Sportsound programme, Dundee chief executive Dave MacKinnon stated that the club had not approached anyone about their vacant manager's position.
"We've got a list of people who have applied and a list of people who have said, through agents and others, they would be interested," said MacKinnon.
"Compensation is an issue. The club don't operate with an overdraft, so therefore it would have to be very, very small compensation.
"We're looking for someone that can motivate the players because I think we've got the best squad in the division and have some really good players.
"They need someone to come in to galvanise them and, in turn, that will get the fans back on track because ultimately they are the ones that will drag us through to, hopefully, promotion this season.
"During the transfer window, I would expect maybe some players to move but some players to come back in. But the nucleus has got to be there because you can't rip apart a team.
"The amount of people that have applied for the job is quite incredible. There are some big names."
