Dundee crisis amid takeover talk

Dundee manager Alex Rae

Dundee manager Alex Rae is scraping around to make up a team against Partick Thistle as he admits a proposed takeover is affecting his preparations.

Asked if he feared for his job, Rae told BBC Sport: "I don't know what's happening and obviously would like to see it resolved sooner than later.

"I've accepted the situation. There is nothing else I can do about it."

Rae has just 12 fit first-team players for Saturday's game and may be forced to field trialists against Thistle.

But Dundee's board has told Rae, who had lined up two players who played in the Scottish Premier League last season, that the club cannot afford any more loan signings.

He was also thwarted in an attempt to recall defender Craig Forsyth, who was farmed out to Arbroath last week, as the 19-year-old must stay with the Second Division club for 28 days.

Dundee, who began the season with high hopes of promotion, go into Saturday's game in sixth place, three places and two points below Thistle - and a further five adrift of leaders Livingston.

Retired chartered surveyor John Bennett, who left the board at neighbours Dundee United last month, is believed to be interested in buying into the Dens Park club, with a decision possible as early as next week.

United issued a statement at the time stressing that Bennett's withdrawal would not adversely affect their own finances.

Rae says he is in the dark over takeover talks at Dens but admits that they are becoming difficult to ignore.

"I'm just trying to put all my energies into the players who are fit," said the under-pressure manager.

Experienced players Colin McMenamin, Gary MacKenzie, Colin Cameron, Darren Young, Paul McHale, Darren Williams and Jim Lauchlan are all sidelined.

But former Rangers and Wolves midfielder Rae added that he is not contemplating coming out of retirement to play, preferring to give an opportunity to players coming through the ranks at Dens Park.
