Derby County academy defender Mark O'Brien has undergone successful surgery to repair valves in his heart.
The condition of the 16-year-old, who made his first-team debut against Watford last season, was spotted when he underwent a routine medical scan.
O'Brien said: "Everything is going according to plan. I'm feeling fit and healthy, and looking forward to getting back to playing football again."
He was named academy player of the year in 2008/09.
O'Brien will rest for the next three months to allow scar tissue to heal. He will be monitored by the club in preparation for resuming light training.
