Dario Gradi has resumed control of first team affairs at Crewe Alexandra on a caretaker basis, replacing Steve Holland, reports BBC Radio Stoke.
Gradi was in charge of the Alex between 1983 and 2007 before handing over the reigns to Holland and taking up a new role as the club's technical director.
Holland is now holding talks with the Crewe board to decide his future.
The Alex currently lie bottom of League One having taken just nine points from their opening 16 games.
Gradi's 24-year spell in charge of the Railwaymen made him the longest-serving manager in English football at the time.
He led Crewe into the second tier of league football for the first time in their history and was largely responsible for forging the club's reputation as a breeding ground for young talent.
The likes of David Platt, Rob Jones, Danny Murphy, Neil Lennon, Dean Ashton and Robbie Savage all went on to play international football after receiving a footballing education under Gradi.

Holland was first employed as a youth coach by Gradi in 1992 after injury cut short his own playing career.
He worked his way through the coaching ranks at the Alexandra Stadium and was eventually appointed Academy director.
In 2006 it was announced that Holland would become more involved with first team affairs, apparently paving the way for him to become Gradi's successor.
The 38-year-old took sole charge of the first team in the summer of 2007. But the Alex struggled, narrowly avoiding relegation to League Two on the final day of the 2007/2008 season.
Despite spending nearly £500,000 on players during the summer, Crewe are once again struggling at the bottom of League One, having not won in 10 games.
The poor results have led some of the club's supporters to call for Holland and assistant manager Neil Baker to resign.
Saturday's 2-0 defeat at home to Leyton Orient was Holland's last in charge, having led the club to 29 defeats in 62 league games.
Gradi will resume control of the first team for the home fixture against Stockport County on Saturday, 22 November.
