McAllister leaves Coventry

"Gary is an extremely hard-working and honest individual, who will be sorely missed by everyone at Coventry City"
Sky Blues chairman Mike McGinnity

Gary McAllister Gary McAllister has resigned as player-manager of Coventry City so that he can devote time to his family.

McAllister recently stepped down on a temporary basis in order to be with his wife Denise while she undergoes treatment for an illness.

But he has now left permanently with Eric Black expected to continue to take charge of first-team affairs.

McAllister said he had come to the decision "after much consideration and discussion with my family".

He added: "I have reached the decision that it would be better to sever all ties with Coventry City at this time so the club can clearly focus on the future.

"I would like to express my gratitude to the club, the players, the staff and all the fans for their support and wish Coventry City every success in the future."

McAllister took over at Highfield Road in April 2002 and the club will make an annoucement about a permanent successor in the near future.

Sky Blues chairman Mike McGinnity said: "I'm extremely sad that Gary has decided to leave.

"I and the rest of the board completely support his decision and would like to thank him for his hard work here, including identifying players which were not in his plans and helping lower the wage bill, which has helped the club ensure future stability.

"Gary is an extremely hard-working and honest individual, who will be sorely missed by everyone at Coventry City.

"We wish him and his family the very best of luck for the future."
