Pardew ready to field youngsters

Charlton Athletic

Charlton boss Alan Pardew has revealed he is ready to put his faith in the young talent at the club next season.

Pardew told BBC London 94.9: "We're very, very fortunate to have the back-up of these young players. Hats off to the academy and Steve Grit.

"It's fantastic news for Charlton because we're creating our own and we've got two or three who have got outstanding careers in front of them.

"Scott Wagstaff, Jonjo Shelvey and Grant Basey are pushing for places."

Pardew admits that with players leaving the club it has been crucial that they have this back-up.

"This is their time, they're going to get an opportunity under me and hopefully we'll have a fantastic year and they'll be a big part of it," he added.

"We've got a bit of work to do. We can't rely on these youngsters to play 46 games at Championship level.

"I want to get 14 players that I think can do the job and then I'm going to back them up with this group of young players."

One of those youngsters is recent signing Stuart Fleetwood. The 22-year-old signed from non-league Forest Green Rovers where he scored 32 goals last season.

Pardew said: "He's very lively, he's been unlucky not to have scored in the last couple of games but he's worked hard and he's very sharp and he gives us something we didn't have last year."
