Burnley sign Iron star Paterson

Martin Paterson

Burnley have completed the club record signing of striker Martin Paterson from Scunthorpe for an initial fee of £1m, which could rise to £1.3m.

The 21-year-old Northern Ireland international has signed a four-year deal with the Clarets.

Scunthorpe will also receive 20% of any profit Burnley make on him.

He told BBC Radio Lancashire: "The manager was the most determined to get me in and that's more important than bigger clubs and bigger names."

He continued: "Burnley have always been the front runner and the club that have pushed it the most and tried the most."

Clarets boss Owen Coyle said: "I have been chasing him from day one, since I came to the football club. He's a player I have admired before I came to Burnley.

"I'm delighted to get him to the club, I made enquiries in January and tried to lure him to Burnley then but it was not possible, but we kept on pursing it.

"He's driven, he knows what he wants he's got pace to burn and he score goals. He'll be a great addition to the football club."

Scunthorpe had previously rejected two bids for Paterson from Burnley, and turned down a written transfer request.

Paterson scored 13 Championship goals in 40 appearances as the Iron were relegated to League One, following his switch from Stoke last summer.

The Clarets' previous record transfer fee was £1m, which they paid for Robbie Blake in 2002 and Ian Moore in 2000.
