Brentford name Fitzgerald as boss

Scott Fitzgerald Brentford caretaker manager Scott Fitzgerald has been handed the position on a permanent basis.

Alan Reeves will continue as assistant to Fitzgerald as the Bees, without a win in 16 league matches, battle against relegation from League One.

Fitzgerald took over as caretaker following the dismissal of Leroy Rosenior on 18 November.

A club statement said: "In a short period of time they have worked on fitness, organisation and team spirit."

Brentford have yet to win under Fitzgerald's stewardship and have picked up only one league point in four fixtures.

Fitzgerald and Reeves are understood to have signed deals until the end of the season, with managing director Keith Dickens commenting: "If we maintain our League One status the incentive for Scott is a good extension of the contract."

Brentford, who play Carlisle at Brunton Park on Saturday, are four points adrift of safety.

But the club have been encouraged by the effect Fitzgerald and Reeves have had upon the squad.

The statement continued: "They have delivered an encouraging performance improvement.

"We believe that a continuation of such improvement will have a positive impact upon results and achieve our goal of maintaining League One status."
