Blackburn complete Fowler signing

Robbie Fowler

Blackburn have signed Robbie Fowler on a three-month pay-as-you-play deal, with the striker in line to face Arsenal at Ewood Park this weekend.

The former Liverpool frontman, 33, has been training with Rovers since Paul Ince took over as manager in June.

"The fact is, I turned down a contract [at Cardiff] and wanted to play back in the Premier League I think that speaks volumes," he told BBC Radio Lancashire.

"My appetite's still big and I want to be involved in the big league."

"I believe he can still do it at this level. If he does well there is no reason why we can't extend the deal"

When asked if he thought he would play in the top flight again following an injury-hit season at Cardiff, he said: "Honestly no - it was a surprise call but one that I was grateful of.

"I'm always confident of scoring goals at any level - regardless of the fact I haven't played that many games over the past year or two.

"My goals-per-game ratio is very good. I've only had one season out of the top flight - I'm still confident.

"Thankfully Blackburn have given me the chance - so it's up to me to try and take it."

Ince said: "I am pleased as he is a proven goalscorer. It's not so long ago he was banging in goals at Anfield.

"I believe he can still do it at this level. If he does well there is no reason why we can't extend the deal."

Fowler is linking up with Ince for the second time in his career after the pair played together at Liverpool between 1997 and 1999.

The former Leeds forward said: "I do know him but the friendship will go out of the window. We know each other and they'll be a bit more pressure but it's down to both of us to make it work.

"I'll be treated as a normal player - probably worse actually but I'm all for it. I don't think there will be any favouritism and I'll be treated just the same as everybody else."

"Fowler is not an appropriate replacement we need someone younger with energy and a goal scoring record"

Fowler, who became a free agent after leaving Cardiff during the summer, is the fourth-highest goalscorer in Premier League history, having had two spells at Liverpool as well as playing for Leeds and Manchester City.

He was also offered a pay-as-you-play contract with Cardiff for this season but turned it down after receiving the chance to have a trial at Blackburn.
