Blackburn midfielder Aaron Mokoena has not suffered a broken leg, according to Rovers chairman John Williams.
The South African was carried off on a stretcher during Blackburn's 2-1 Carling Cup victory over Portsmouth at Fratton Park on Tuesday.
But Williams told BBC Radio Lancashire that X-rays had revealed the injury to be less severe than originally feared.
Mokoena has broken that leg before and his a pin in it but Williams said: "The X-ray showed no signs of any break."
Williams added it was too soon to say whether the midfielder would be fit enough to be included in the Rovers squad for Saturday's Premier League game against Liverpool.
Blackburn manager Mark Hughes is just relieved that the injury is not more serious.
He said: "Mokoena is okay, thankfully. He got a bang on his leg, where a plate had earlier been inserted.
"As he went back on to the field he felt some pain and it frightened him more than anything.
"I have seen him this morning. He is walking around and is a little bit sore.
"It is not as bad as we initially thought but he might have a scan just as a precaution."
Mokoena join Blackburn from Racing Genk for £300,000 in 2005 and has made 59 first-team starts for the club.
England winger David Bentley also limped off before the interval with a recurrence of a shin injury.
