Blackburn sign Roberts from Wigan

Jason Roberts Blackburn have signed Wigan striker Jason Roberts on a four-year deal for an undisclosed fee.

The 28-year-old, who the club's top scorer last season with 14 goals, said he turned down a new contract to stay with the Latics in May.

But Wigan chairman Dave Whelan has denied offering Roberts new terms.

Roberts told the club's website: "One of my goals was to play in Europe regularly, so to play Uefa cup football this year will be a big thing for me."

Roberts, Blackburn's second signing in 24 hours following their capture of former Charlton forward Francis Jeffers, added: "I've known about the interest for a while.

"But I've got to work hard and try to get myself in the team.

"I always thought this was a dream move for me"

"I always thought it was a dream move for me and I'm just really happy it has come through.

"The stature of the club, Uefa Cup football, coming sixth in the league last season, the manager, the players - I've played against Rovers twice last year and they were fantastic - they are all reasons why I have signed.

"First and foremost, I want to help the team and be part of a successful team because that is the most important thing.

"If I can get my fair share of goals as well then that will be a big consideration."

Roberts joined Wigan in January 2004 from West Brom for £1.4m.

The Grenada international had been the subject of interest from Turkish side Besiktas earlier in the summer.

Wigan boss Paul Jewell said the move was right for both parties.

"Jason has been an important member of the team since the day he arrived but when the offer came in from Blackburn we felt it reflected his value and we gave him permission to speak to Mark Hughes," he explained.
