O'Neill may look for two keepers

Scott Carson

Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill says he may have to try to sign two goalkeepers this summer.

Scott Carson's future is still unclear after the end of his loan spell with no agreement between Villa and Liverpool.

If Carson does not return to Villa, Stuart Taylor will be the only senior goalkeeper at the club following the release of Thomas Sorensen.

"I feel we should have three goalkeepers anyway, especially if we get into the Uefa Cup," said O'Neill.

The Villa manager added: "Most teams have three goalkeepers. It's a specialised position. But we have a number of issues.

"Scott isn't our player. We have first option on him, but I haven't discussed anything with him. Liverpool have the right to do what they see fit.

"We've decided nothing. When we do, Scott should be the first to know"

Carson spent the whole of the season with Villa and has expressed his irritation at Liverpool valuing him at £10m.

Villa attempted to sign United States international goalkeeper Brad Guzan in January but failed to secure a work permit after agreeing a fee with his club Chivas USA.

However O'Neill said it was possible that Villa would make another attempt to sign the 23-year-old, who could play in the forthcoming international friendly against England.

"We'd hoped he'd have the work permit and would have been here for four or five months working with Scott Carson and the other goalkeepers to get a feel of the 'British' scene as it were.

"Now, if there was a chance of getting him playing and helping his career towards the work permit then we'd definitely revisit it. The goalkeeping situation is one we're looking at."
