Maloney's Celtic link played down

Shaun Maloney Aston Villa striker Shaun Maloney will not be returning to Celtic despite increased speculation over the weekend.

The Scotland international, 24, was lured to Villa Park in January by former Celtic manager Martin O'Neill for a fee of £1m.

Celtic manager Gordon Strachan has not ruled out a move for Maloney.

But his agent John Halliwell told the Scottish Sun: "There is always talk about Shaun because he is a talented player but this is completely made up."

Halliwell continued: "All this talk about Shaun being unhappy is news to me but there's nothing in it.

"The last conversation I had with Celtic was in January."

When questioned about the rumours linking Maloney with a shock return to the Scottish champions, Strachan said: "It would be unfair of me to talk about that - he's signed to another club."

But Halliwell remained adamant that the forward was intent on proving himself in England after an unconvincing first six months of his Villa career.

"He's been working so hard to get fit because he's so desperate to make an impact in the Premiership," Halliwell said.

"He's away to the USA this Wednesday with Aston Villa.

"It's a big season for him and he's just excited to now get his first full season in the Premiership underway."

Maloney, who was player and young player of the year in the Scottish Premier League for season 2005/06, has also been linked with a move to Roy Keane's Sunderland.
