Edinburgh clubs condemn jeering

Hearts players pay their respects to the late George Miller

Hibernian have hit out at the fans who ruined a minute's silence in memory of the late George Miller ahead of Saturday's Edinburgh derby.

A minority failed to properly observe the tribute to the Hearts legend before kick-off in the clash at Tynecastle.

"The club apologises to the former player's family if the events caused offence," read a statement from Hibs.

Meanwhile, Hearts have admonished supporters who taunted Hibs midfielder Dean Shiels over his loss of an eye.

The Northern Ireland international, who came on as a second half replacement, underwent surgery in 2006 to remove an eye, which was damaged in an accident when he was eight-years-old.

St Mirren offered an apology to the player in November after Shiels was targeted by a few Paisley fans behind the dugout as he was substituted at Love Street but Saturday's abuse was on a much larger scale.

"It is important that our supporters remember the standards that we wish to maintain as a club," a Hearts spokesperson said.

"There is a pride and dignity which is ingrained in this club's history and we must respect this at all times.

"It is important that the minority involved in singing the offensive song at the weekend's game remember there is no place for such behaviour within Heart of Midlothian Football Club."

Following Saturday's 0-0 draw, the Edinburgh rivals meet again on Scottish Cup duty at Easter Road on Sunday.

The Hibs statement added: "In looking forward to the Scottish Cup tie, Hibernian has urged all its supporters to continue their exemplary record of showing respect for others whilst supporting the team in a vocal and sporting fashion."
