Lee Wilkie turned the ball home from close range after 27 minutes, as the Ibrox side largely failed to trouble the Tangerines in the first half.
Rangers briefly came to life and Daniel Cousin equalised from the penalty spot in the 50th minute.
However, United captain Barry Robson responded with another penalty two minutes later for a deserved win.

The travelling supporters joy was short-lived, however, with United driving back at Rangers.
Carlos Cuellar was the guilty party under pressure in the danger zone with the Spanish defender clumsily upending Jordan Robertson.
Robson despatched the spot kick, bringing the game to life as a consequence.

Boyd lashed an awful attempt over in the closing stages, but there was to be no way back, with the Taysiders' determination and aggression ultimately holding sway.
