Dundee Utd 2-1 Rangers

By Julian Taylor

United team-mates congratulate scorer Lee Wilkie (centre) Dundee United chalked up their third consecutive league win with a battling victory over Rangers at Tannadice.

Lee Wilkie turned the ball home from close range after 27 minutes, as the Ibrox side largely failed to trouble the Tangerines in the first half.

Rangers briefly came to life and Daniel Cousin equalised from the penalty spot in the 50th minute.

However, United captain Barry Robson responded with another penalty two minutes later for a deserved win.

The Tangerines now go joint second in the SPL with Rangers after a performance full of desire and passion.

Rangers - fresh from their meeting with Barcelona on midweek Champions League duty - made two changes from the side who drew with the Spaniards.

Amdy Faye and DaMarcus Beasley were drafted into the starting line-up for the clash at Tannadice in place of Charlie Adam and Nacho Novo.

Meanwhile, Dundee United boss Craig Levein made just one change from the team who defeated Hearts comfortably at Tynecastle last week.

Goalkeeper Grzegorz Szamotulski was suspended following his red card in Edinburgh, allowing Euan McLean to make his first start of the season.

The Light Blues were looking to score the first goal by a visiting side at Tannadice this season.

There was an early flashpoint when Alan Hutton was booked for a rash challenge on Noel Hunt, with the Irishman also cautioned for his reaction.

The Tangerines were displaying plenty of midfield industry, and Allan McGregor was tested with a powerful Robson strike from distance, but the Rangers goalkeeper did well to smother the shot.

It was a taste of things to come, as the unlikely figure of Wilkie stepped up to put Craig Levein's men ahead.

Willo Flood swept a dangerous free kick from the left into the six yard area, and the defender stole in at the far post to cleverly guile the ball into the the net, with McGregor stranded.

Rangers' Daniel Cousin holds off Darren Dods' challenge

The visitors were strangely muted for long spells, and Beasley could only pull a long range effort wide.

Nonetheless, Rangers went close when Lee McCulloch saw Darren Dods block his netbound shot in the 42nd minute after the strong-running Cousin worked hard to set up the opportunity in the penalty box.

Ibrox manager Walter Smith brought on Novo for the ineffective Faye at the interval and there was an extra verve to Rangers' play.

A frentic two minute spell changed the complexion of the game.

Christian Kalvenes impeded Beasley and Gabon international Cousin calmly stroked the penalty home for the equaliser.

The travelling supporters joy was short-lived, however, with United driving back at Rangers.

Carlos Cuellar was the guilty party under pressure in the danger zone with the Spanish defender clumsily upending Jordan Robertson.

Robson despatched the spot kick, bringing the game to life as a consequence.

Mindful of their impressive home record, United's confidence grew and Rangers continued to struggle for any kind of fluency.

Prince Bauben arrowed a powerful 20-yard left foot drive but McGregor pulled off a superb save to keep Rangers in contention.

Smith sent on Kris Boyd for Cousin as the Ibrox side sought some answers.

The superb Robson brought the best out of McGregor again with a set-piece.

Boyd lashed an awful attempt over in the closing stages, but there was to be no way back, with the Taysiders' determination and aggression ultimately holding sway.
