St Mirren 1-1 Hibernian

John Sutton celebrates his late equaliser St Mirren grabbed a late equaliser to boost their hopes of avoiding relegation from the SPL.

The opening exchanges were fairly scrappy as both sides struggled to play any decent football.

Hibs captain Rob Jones broke the deadlock after 20 minutes when he bundled home Merouane Zemmama's free-kick from close-range.

Stewart Kean was denied by Hibs keeper Andrew McNeil, before substitute John Sutton rescued a point for the Buddies.

The draw gives St Mirren a seven-point cushion over SPL basement side Dunfermline with six games remaining.

The home side recalled defender Kirk Broadfoot following suspension for the visit of Hibernian.

Sutton had to settle for a placer on the bench after recovering from an ankle problem.

With the exception of long-term absentee Chris Killen, Hibs were at full-strength.

However, manager John Collins chose to rest several players, with six alterations from Sunday's Edinburgh derby defeat.

Ross Chisholm was handed a debut in central midfield and the 19-year-old was one of the few bright lights on a disappointing night for the visitors.

The Buddies almost took the lead when Craig Molloy's shot was blocked by a green jersey and fell kindly to the feet of Kean.

But the striker's effort was comfortably held by Hibs goalkeeper McNeil.

Saints then had another decent chance to open the scoring when Kean's speculative drive whistled just over the crossbar.

Jones gave the visitors the lead with a scrappy goal when he nudged in Zemamma's free-kick from inside a congested six-yard box.

Saints could have hit back immediately when Garry Brady teed up Hugh Murray, who went close with an audacious 35-yard strike.

Kean thought he had equalised when he connected with David van Zanten's cross only to see his header superbly blocked by McNeil.

A below-par Hibs looked to have secured victory, before Sutton's equaliser in the last minute.

The forward pounced on a mistake by Jones to slam in an impressive shot from 16 yards.
