Kilmarnock 0-0 Dundee United

Lee Miller (left) is ordered off at Rugby Park Ten-man Dundee United held out for a draw at Rugby Park against Kilmarnock.

Tangerines' striker Lee Miller was sent off in the first-half for a second bookable offence after Craig Brewster's side had the best of the play.

Killie enjoyed plenty of possession after the break, but failed to consistently trouble United goalkeeper Derek Stillie.

Steven Naismith and Garry Hay went close for Kilmarnock but United defended well to take a point.

The Ayrshire side were in confident mood, following a superb fightback to defeat Hibernian 2-1 last Saturday.

Home manager Jim Jefferies made one change to his team.

Striker Paul Di Giacomo dropped out of the starting 11 to be replaced by Gary Wales in the only alteration to last week's line-up.

United, hoping to build on last weeks' 2-2 draw at Rangers, brought in Miller in place of flu-stricken Noel Hunt.

Player-boss Craig Brewster resisted the temptation to draft new defender David Proctor into his starting line-up.

United started the game in confident mood.

Both Mark Kerr and Miller were lively but referee Stuart Dougal cautioned the latter in the ninth minute.

Miller's enthusiasm typified United and it took a brave intervention from Jason Fowler in his own six-yard box to deny Stuart Duff a clear header and the chance to put his side ahead on 17 minutes.

Killie's in-form forward Steven Naismith struck a fierce shot which Stillie did well to turn over.

However, the Tangerines suffered a setback when Miller was promptly ordered off in the 39th minute for a second bookable offence when he clashed with Fraser Wright.

Brewster debated the sending off with Dougal as the teams went in for the interval, and it looked like it would be a long afternoon for United.

The visitors managed to cope well with Killie's early pressure in the second period.

Jefferies attempted to pose them a different problem when he brought on winger Stephen Murray in place of ineffective target man Colin Nish.

Murray immediately showed plenty of enthusiasm but Killie were still labouring to cause 10-man United real problems.

A snap-shot from left-back Hay, which whistled over the United bar was as close as Killie came to troubling Stillie.

Norwegian defender Christian Kalvenes did have to make a terrific interception from Naismith in the latter stages.

However, the game overall lacked the necessary excitement and the Taysiders will undoubtedly be the happier with the outcome.
