Airdrie suffered their second successive defeat to further damage their Second Division promotion hopes.

Chances were few and far between in a drab first-half, with Ayr's Ryan Stevenson going closest when his free-kick struck the crossbar.

The visitors opened the scoring in the 54th minute when Jerome Vareille's cross was headed home by substitute Paul McLeod.

Stevenson sealed victory with 20 minutes remaining with a cool finish.
