Hibernian 3-0 Brechin City

Hibernian defender Paul Hanlon

Hibernian enjoyed a comfortable win over Second Division Brechin City in the second round of the Co-operative Insurance Cup.

Derek Riordan chipped goalkeeper Craig Nelson to put the Easter Road side in front after 10 minutes.

An own goal by Ian Nimmo put Hibs further ahead six minutes later.

And Paul Hanlon's 25-yard strike completed the scoring 10 minutes into the second half and the hosts missed further chances to add to their lead.

An attack-minded Hibs quickly took control of the game and Riordan was off-target with two early attempts.

But it was not long before the Scottish Premier League side took the lead as Riordan spotted Nelson off his line and deftly lifted the ball over the keeper's head and into the net.

Gary Fusco threatened an equaliser for the visitors before Riordan was involved in extending Hibs' lead.

The forward collected a short corner and attempted a cross, which was diverted past Nelson by Nimmo.

Neil Janczyk had a chance to get Brechin back into the match but the effort failed to trouble keeper Graham Stack, who was making his first Hibs appearance.

Anthony Stokes had two chances in quick succession to score his first Hibs goal but missed the target on both occasions.

First, the former Arsenal striker shot wide from a promising position and then sliced a rebound effort after John Rankin had struck the woodwork from 20 yards.

Riordan volleyed over and Abdessalam Benjelloun drilled a shot wide as Hibs ended the half strongly.

Another volley by Riordan early in the second half cleared the bar before Hanlon completed the scoring.

The full-back cut in from the left and drove into the far corner.

Stokes' frustration continued as he failed to convert a teasing Riordan centre and the Republic of Ireland cap then saw a low shot blocked by Nelson.

A fierce volley by Stokes was blocked and there were further missed chances late on by substitutes Colin Nish and Kurtis Byrne, who was making his debut.
