IFK Gothenburg 0-1 Derry City

Sean Hargan Sean Hargan's 79th-minute header earned Derry City a shock away win over IFK Gothenburg in Thursday's Uefa Cup qualifying round first leg in Sweden.

Stefan Selakovic and Marcus Berg missed first-half chances for the home side, but Derry had a penalty claim turned down when Hargan was brought down.

Derry's Killian Brennan crashed a shot against the woodwork on 59 minutes.

Hargan finally broke the deadlock with 11 minutes to go before two great saves from David Forde sealed a famous win.

Derry had a lucky escape when Selakovic missed a great chance for Gothenburg in the eighth minute.

The home side carved out another good opportunity on 26 minutes, but Berg failed to hit the target from close range.

But Derry felt they should have had a penalty when Hargan was felled in the area by Adam Johansson on the stroke of half-time.

The visitors came out fired up after the break, with Brennan's long-range shot crashing back off the Gothenburg woodwork on 59 minutes.

Darren Kelly and Kevin McHugh also went close for the visitors before Hargan powered home Kevin Deery's cross to break the deadlock.

Gothenburg produced some intense late pressure, but Forde's two brilliant stops kept the home side at bay.

The second leg will take place at the Brandywell in a fortnight.
