Reid interested in Irish job

Former Sunderland boss Peter Reid has revealed he would be interested in taking over as manager of the Republic of Ireland.

Mick McCarthy led Ireland to the second round of the World Cup in the summer, but resigned from the job last week following the disappointing start to the Euro 2004 qualifying campaign.

Reid, sacked after seven years at Sunderland last month, claims he would welcome an approach from the Football Association of Ireland.

Former Irish international Niall Quinn worked as a coach under Reid at Sunderland and could link up with him again.

John Aldridge and Joe Kinnear have both said they would be delighted to take over as Ireland coach.

"I think Mick McCarthy has done a fantastic job there following big Jack Charlton," said Reid.

"It is a country which is close to my heart and I would be interested in talking to them, but I don't want to tout for the job.

"At the moment I am quite happy with what I am doing at this time, just enjoying my rest.

"They have got some good players. It is something I have read about and that I wouldn't dismiss."

The former England international turned down the chance to manage Sheffield Wednesday earlier in November.
