Hartson hails Ramsey & Collison

Aaron Ramsey

Ex-Wales striker John Hartson believes Aaron Ramsey and Jack Collison are poised to rule Wales' midfield for years to come.

Hartson also described the 1-0 win over Denmark as "probably the best" under manager John Toshack.

"Ramsey and Collison in the middle of the park are two exciting players," he told BBC Wales.

"They've taken over from (Carl) Fletcher and (Carl) Robinson as far as I'm concerned."

Arsenal hotshot Ramsey, 17, put in a fine display on his senior team debut and could have scored early on had captain Craig Bellamy picked him out instead of shooting wide.

West Ham's Collison, 20, won his third cap and also deservedly received plaudits.

"Them two will be the mainstay in the middle of the park for me," added Hartson.

"Jason (Koumas) wasn't there and he'll be looking over his shoulder now.

"Wales seem to have competition now.

"I remember Gary Speed playing for Wales when I was in the side.

What do you think about Hartson's comments?

"Gary was playing centre of midfield in the Premier League for Newcastle and we'd come to Wales and Gary would find himself playing left-back.

"He couldn't get into the Welsh side in the centre of midfield because of Robbie Savage, Mark Pembridge and Simon Davies and other players that were there.

"But that's healthy. It's a headache that John's been given by his squad, but it's a headache that I'm sure he doesn't mind getting."

Hartson also praised the all-round performance of Wales who were without the injured Simon Davies, Joe Ledley and Jason Koumas for the tough trip to Denmark.

"I was extremely impressed," he added. "I think it was the first time I have all these together - youngsters combining with the senior squad.

"I'd go so far as to say that's probably the best I've seen Wales play under John Toshack.

"I thought they had a great balance to the team.

"The defenders were excellent. When they needed their goalkeeper late on he made a great save.

"I thought Craig Bellamy played with a maturity last night and scored a wonderful goal. He's got that cutting edge."
