Reid left out of Republic squad

Andy Reid

Republic of Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni has left Andy Reid out of his squad for the friendly against Poland at Croke Park on 19 November.

Reid has yet to have a single minute on the pitch in an international since the Italian's arrival in Ireland in May.

Last month, Trapattoni insisted that he had "no problem" with Reid.

However, Reid has been left out with Trapattoni including uncapped Blackburn midfielder Keith Andrews while Bolton's Joey O'Brien is also omitted.

Last month, O'Brien spoke of his frustration at not featuring for the Republic in recent games.

Reid's exclusion will lead to renewed speculation that there is a rift between the Sunderland player and the manager.

The former Tottenham and Charlton midfielder has not played for his country since the 2-2 European Championship qualifying draw with Wales in Cardiff last November.

He also missed the end-of-season training camp in Portugal and friendlies against Serbia and Colombia through injury.

The midfielder returned to the panel for the friendly in Norway in August and was included in the last two squads, but without seeing any action.

Trapattoni picked Manchester United youngster Darron Gibson ahead of Reid for last month's home victory against Cyprus.

Gibson did not any rave reviews for his display and Trapattoni's decision to omit Reid from the Poland game suggests that the Sunderland player is unlikely to feature in the near future.

Trapattoni has selected Glenn Whelan as the main holding midfielder in recent games and Steven Reid featured to great effect in a central role against Georgia and Montenegro.

However, the Blackburn man is now ruled out again by a long-term injury which makes Andy Reid's absence for this month's game all the more noteworthy.

When asked whether Reid's frustration was mounting prior to the Cyprus game, Trapattoni said:"I don't understand why Andy Reid is more important than other situations."

Steve Finnan, who missed the World Cup qualifier against Cyprus because of injury, is again ruled out for the 19 November game at Croke Park.

In addition, Stoke's Rory Delap does not earn a recall despite calls for his inclusion following his recent long throw heroics in the Premier League.
