Lawro on England

By Mark Lawrenson
BBC Sport football expert

A win is a win, as they say, but this game was very much a case of "we've done enough", nothing more.

Make no mistake - Andorra are a pub team. They came out with the sole intention of killing the game, slowing the play and doing their level best to wind England up.

Fabio Capello Even so, England started brightly. Theo Walcott got behind the defence a few times early on and I thought both full backs did well to give the team width.

But after an opening full of verve and buzz, England fell away and - as they always seem to - at that point they reverted to type and played the long ball.

All they did was gift possession back to the Andorran defence.

I guess credit should go to manager Fabio Capello, though. He addressed a few things at half-time, brought on Joe Cole and Emile Heskey, and it worked.

Still, though, as is so often the case with England, we are left with more questions than answers.

This performance was better than the one England put in last time against Andorra under Steve McClaren, but Croatia are up next and they are a quality, quality outfit.

What team will Capello pick for that one? I don't think anybody could really guess.

Joe Cole must have played his way into the team but, as well as he played, I don't think Walcott will start - which means a return to the side for David Beckham.

"Overall, I think this is a good result because Andorra had 11 men in their own half most of the time"

Heskey may well get a start too - Wayne Rooney plays better alongside another striker up top - and Heskey's height and power could well upset the Croats.

Overall, though, I think Capello's overriding feeling tonight will have been one of frustration.

Yes, it's job done tonight, but where do England go from here?

Wednesday's match in Croatia is a big, big game and England will absolutely have to step up a level or two to get anything from that match.

It will be a few hard days' work for Capello and England.
