Butcher and Pressley join Scots

George Burley flanked by Terry Butcher (left) and Steven Pressley Terry Butcher and Steven Pressley have been confirmed as assistants to new Scotland manager George Burley.

Former England captain Butcher was a team-mate of Burley's at Ipswich, while Pressley skippered Hearts during Burley's short reign at Tynecastle.

Pressley insists he can add to his 32 caps but the Celtic defender has been used sparingly this season.

He was not listed for this week's squad gathering at Loch Lomond but Burley will monitor Pressley's progress.

"He'll be considered if he's playing regularly for his club and at a good level," said Burley of the 34-year-old.

"I will give everything to George Burley and Scotland"

Rangers defender David Weir, three years older than Pressley, is among the 27-man pool assembled by Burley on Sunday for a three-day get-together.

There were no new faces but Burley insists he will tinker with his side for the friendly against Croatia on 26 March at Hampden.

"There will be changes, no doubt about that and I will have a look at different people in view of the World Cup coming up," said the ex-Southampton boss.

"But I certainly haven't ruled David out. He is in the squad and he is a big influence.

"At 37, you have to have a look at it but I had a wee chat with David this morning and he is still enjoying himself."

Turning his attention to former Motherwell manager Butcher, Burley said: "I don't care about nationality.

"Terry has been involved in Scottish football longer than me.

"As a manager I have to be 100% sure that Terry will do the job for Scotland.

"I had to be positive that this was the right appointment for me and for the country, those were my only thoughts."

What do you make of Burley's choices?

Butcher, who enjoyed a successful stint as a player with Rangers, struggled in his last managerial positions at Sydney FC and Brentford.

"I'm already calling Scotland 'we'," said Butcher.

"I'm up front in everything I do, I'm an honest guy and I'm very committed.

"I can only say so much but I will give everything to George Burley and Scotland.

"I desperately want Scotland to do well and to qualify (for the 2010 World Cup) because that will reflect well on George and the country.

"I know what happens when you qualify for a major finals and have a successful campaign.

"I know what it will mean to the Tartan Army and to everybody associated with Scotland and so I'm totally committed."
