Venables on Bulgarian shortlist

Terry Venables Bulgaria have made an approach to former England coach Terry Venables about the possibility of him taking charge of their national team.

Venables is one of five foreign coaches on a seven-man shortlist drawn up by the Bulgarian Football Union.

He was in charge of England from 1993 to 1996 and worked as assistant to Steve McClaren for the past two years.

The 64-year-old is also a leading candidate to succeed Steve Staunton as coach of the Republic of Ireland team.

Bulgaria and the Republic are in the same qualifying group for the 2010 World Cup, a group which is headed by holders Italy.

And although close friend Ted Buxton said last month that Venables "fancies" the Republic job, Bulgaria still hope to persuade him to speak to them.

"I don't want to reveal the names of the foreign coaches we've talked to because we're still negotiating with them.

"But I can tell you we've held talks with Macedonia coach Srecko Katanec and we're waiting for Terry Venables's answer as well," BFU president Borislav Mihaylov told The Sun.

Dimitar Penev is currently in charge of the Bulgarian team following Hristo Stoichkov's resignation eight months ago and he is one of the two domestic candidates, along with Plamen Markov, who has already had one spell in charge.
