Finney delighted with Nugent goal

By Paul Fletcher

Sir Tom Finney (left) and David Nugent Sir Tom Finney has spoken of his pride at seeing David Nugent become the first Preston North End player to score for England in 49 years.

"It was only a tap in but nevertheless he scored and that was very important on his debut," Finney told BBC Sport.

"It gives me a bit of a thrill to see a Preston player wearing an England shirt - the club itself will be very proud."

Finney was the last Preston player to score for England when he found the net against Northern Ireland in 1958.

The 84-year-old, who was named Footballer of the Year in 1954 and 1957, made 433 league appearances for Preston, scoring 187 goals.

"David Nugent was not afraid of the status and expectations - he has done very, very well"

Finney retired from international football in 1958 after making 76 appearances for England. He remains fifth in the all-time scoring charts with 30 goals.

And the winger - known as the Preston plumber - admitted that he did not think he would have had to wait so long to see another North End player in an England shirt.

"I did not think it would be so long," added Finney.

"But then again Preston dropped out of the top division shortly after I finished and we have never been back."

Nugent came on as a 79th-minute substitute against Andorra and scored from very close range in the final minute of normal time.

"Three years ago to the night, Nugent was playing for Bury against Boston, which shows how far he has come"
BBC pundit and former Preston player Mark Lawrenson

"I think David was well worth his chance," said Finney. "He has done a good job for Preston and been quite a good goalscorer.

"I like his pace and control on the ball. He is very, very quick. I think he went into it in the right frame of mind and was not afraid of the status and expectations - he has done very, very well."

And the Preston legend is hopeful that Nugent's goal will have given the 22-year-old striker the confidence to go on a scoring run as North End push for promotion to the Premiership.

"Preston are in a very good position," he said.

"The main thing is that they go up automatically because I don't want to see them in the play-offs again - they have lost all the ones they have been in."

BBC Pundit Mark Lawrenson, who started his career at Preston, echoed Sir Tom's views when he said it was great for Nugent and the club.

Lawrenson said Nugent's debut strike was also a great incentive for players outside the Premiership.

Lawrenson said: "Three years ago to the night, Nugent was playing for Bury against Boston, which just shows how far he has come.

"People have said he only got into the side because of injuries to others, but that's football. That's how most people get into a side and the key is to grab the chance when you get it.

"I was on the same flight back from Barcelona with Preston boss Paul Simpson and the chairman, and they were both delighted."
