Australia keen to protect Viduka

Middlesbrough's Australian striker Mark Viduka Australia want to reach a compromise with Middlesbrough striker Mark Viduka to prolong his international career.

The 31-year-old starred in the Socceroos' 2-0 friendly win over China in Guangzhou.

Interim coach Graham Arnold told The Australian: "Call it mollycoddling if you like but we can look after him with a well-thought out schedule.

"He won't have to play in too many meaningless games and we can cut down on his travelling."

Arnold is keen to convince Viduka to continue playing for Australia beyond the Asian Cup finals in July.

"I know Mark has certain ideas in his head at the moment and I can understand his thinking," added Arnold.

Viduka hinted to the Melbourne Age that he is prepared to consider Arnold's plans.

The Boro striker said: "I haven't made a decision whether I will quit.

"There is obviously pressure on me to go on. I enjoy playing with the national team but it's just a situation we have to weigh up.

"Maybe we can make some sort of compromise."
