Hereford scored early in the first half and late in the second to reach round two of the FA Cup with victory over Sutton of the Ryman League.
Mathieu Manset scored from close range after Kevin Scriven pushed a Craig King drive into his path.
Manset was then sent off following a confrontation with Sutton's Alan Pouton but the visitors could not capitalise.
And when Jason Goodliffe handled in the area, Ryan Valentine fired a low penalty into the corner of the net.
Hereford manager John Trewick told BBC Hereford and Worcester:
"Unfortunately the game was a bit stop-start and there were a few niggly things going on, then there was the sending-off.
"We never really got a flow going to our game.
"But we worked really hard and stuck at it to the very end so I'm pleased with a lot of aspects of it."
Sutton United manager Paul Doswell told BBC London 94.9:
"It had the ingredients there for a shock at one point because Hereford are the better side.
"The record shows at home they've been very good this season so one of the things we did was to set up to make sure we didn't concede too early. That game plan went out of the window in the first 15 minutes.
"We thought we had a chance to push men on when they had a man sent off and we gave it a go. But, ultimately, the reason we're playing in the Ryman Premier League is because we haven't got the same quality."
