Moses Ashikodi's close-range header after 15 minutes saw Blue Square Premier side Kettering send League One team Hartlepool out of the FA Cup.
Hartlepool started brightly with Denis Behan's side foot shot after 33 seconds saved by Kettering keeper Lee Harper.
Ashikodi made it 1-0 when he found the net after flicking John Dempster's header across goal and into the net.
Hartlepool battled hard but Behan blazed over, Adam Boyd's poked shot was saved and Peter Hartley fired wide.
Kettering manager Mark Cooper told BBC Radio Northampton:
"They're doing well in League 1. When the draw came out it was one that we weren't relishing beacuse its a long way.
"It was a game against a good team and like we found in the last round if your levels drop a bit and the team you're playing against up theirs it becomes an even game and I think that's what happened today."
