We deserved to win, says Trollope

Paul Trollope Bristol Rovers first-team coach Paul Trollope believes his side were full value for their shock FA Cup fifth round win against Southampton.

Rickie Lambert's deflected free-kick six minutes from time sealed the victory for the League One side.

Trollope said: "We think we deserved to go through. We defended well and limited them to few opportunities.

"We were the better side in the first half but didn't have enough quality around the box."

"We just couldn't handle them"

Trollope added: "We got a bit of luck for the goal but were delighted when it came. It's nice to know we have our place in the history books. I'm very proud of the players."

Goal hero Lambert, celebrating his 26th birthday, said: "I can't believe it, we're in the quarter-finals. I'm not bothered how it went in - it went in, I'm ecstatic.

"We deserved it. It was a bit lucky, the goal, but we deserved it. I'm absolutely made up. I'm not bothered at all how it went in. It went in, we're in the quarter-finals.

"It means everything to the city and Rovers fans. Everyone is going to be looking at the draw on Monday and hopefully we'll get someone who we have a chance against."

Southampton caretaker-boss Jason Dodd criticised his side, saying: "It's disappointing because we didn't do enough and didn't create enough chances.

"We knew the pitch would have a part to play but they adapted to the situation better than us.

"We just had to battle and we didn't do it, we just couldn't handle them.

"All credit to Rovers for being brave enough to go for it."
