Newcastle were sent crashing out of the FA Cup by Birmingham City in their third round replay at St James' Park.
Gary McSheffrey's assured finish put the Championship leaders ahead and it was 2-0 when Nobby Solano put Cameron Jerome's cross into his own net.
James Milner replied from 30 yards but the Blues quickly resumed control when Steven Taylor was sent off and Bruno N'Gotty's fierce shot made it 3-1.
Seb Larsson slotted home before DJ Campbell ran clear to add a late fifth.
Newcastle's form has improved significantly in recent weeks but it is back to square one for manager Glenn Roeder after this sorry defeat.
The same young Magpies team outfought Tottenham in a thriller at White Hart Lane on Sunday but, while that performance was full of verve and passion, this display was lacking in every area.
Birmingham are flying high at the top of the Championship but they will rarely have had such an easy first half as they did here.
Blues defender Matthew Upson has made public his desire to move to a Premiership side during the current transfer window and he did his hopes no harm with an utterly dominant display at the back.
But it was not just in defence that Steve Bruce's team were well on top. McSheffrey and Larsson were a constant threat on either wing and the power and pace of Campbell and Jerome posed plenty of problems up front.
Newcastle fell behind after just five minutes when Peter Ramage failed to clear and could only help the resulting cross on to McSheffrey, who steadied himself before finishing with aplomb.
The Magpies argued that Campbell was offside and impeding Given on the goalline - but they could have no complaints about the next goal.
Just before the break Jerome left Ramage for dead on the right and, in trying to prevent Campbell from reaching his low cross, Solano could only direct the ball goalwards.
Roeder's side had barely managed a shot in the first 45 minutes but that changed after the restart and they pulled a goal back when Milner strode towards the visitors' area and let fly with a screamer that left Maik Taylor clutching at air.
That should have been the platform for a Newcastle revival - but instead they shot themselves in the foot.
Taylor failed to control a throughball and only succeeded in hauling down Campbell on the edge of the are after the striker nipped in behind him.
It meant an instant red card for the defender, and things quickly got worse for his team-mates.
From the resulting free-kick Larsson hit the wall and the ball bounced into the path of N'Gotty - who made no mistake with a fierce shot into the top corner.
And with time running out Birmingham added to their tally.
Larsson deservedly got on the scoresheet with a fine finish into the bottom corner and Campbell joined him before the end, running clear and slotting home.
It was nothing but humiliation for Newcastle but Birmingham can look forward to a home tie against another top-flight team, Reading, in round four.
