Arsenal repeated North London rivals Spurs' feat 10 years earlier by claiming the double in a thrilling Wembley climax.
But, where Spurs had achieved the feat with elegance and flair, Arsenal did it with with sheer guts and professionalism.
They won the final the hard way too, coming from behind to win in extra time with a remarkable strike from long-haired midfielder Charlie George.
A tactical battle failed to produce a goal in regular time, though George Graham did head against the bar with 12 minutes left.
Liverpool finally made the breakthrough two minutes into extra time, when Steve Heighway caught out Bob Wilson to score inside the Arsenal keeper's near post.
Wilson's rare blunder was quickly forgotten as substitute Eddie Kelly levelled for Arsenal nine minutes later, though Graham also claimed the goal as he took a swing at the ball which deceived Ray Clemence.
A draw looked odds-on, but a visibly drained George suddenly burst to life with eight minutes left, letting fly with a 20-yard shot which gave Clemence no chance.
