Manchester United and Villarreal both progressed after an unspectacular goalless draw in Spain on Tuesday.
Cristiano Ronaldo's first half strike was brilliantly saved onto the bar by Diego Lopez and Wayne Rooney's cross was deflected towards the goal but cleared by Joan Capdevila.
Then with six minutes remaining Capdevila was sent off for a high tackle on Ronaldo.

Porto won in impressive style at the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium after Lisandro's first-half double put them in control against Fenerbahce.
The Brazilian opened the scoring with an acrobatic volley after Volkan made a hash of a Bruno Alves cross, then doubled his side's lead from close range 20 minutes later despite appearing to handle the ball in the build-up.
Fenerbahce came out strongly after the break and pulled a goal back when a speculative Colin Kazim-Richards shot hit Alves and looped into the net but failed to find a way through for an equaliser.
The Turkish side will have to beat Dynamo Kiev in Ukraine in a fortnight's time to secure third spot and qualify for the Uefa Cup.

Real Madrid joined Juventus in the final 16 after edging their way past BATE Borisov in a lively 1 -0 victory.
Champions League legend Raul settled some early nerves, collecting Royston Drenthe's left-wing cross and smashing a left-foot shot in-off the crossbar.
The Spanish outfit dictated proceedings and Raul came within inches of getting a second after hitting the bar in the second half.
