Milan-bound Beckham makes MLS vow

David Beckham

David Beckham says he would be "honoured" to join AC Milan on loan but insists his long-term future remains in America with Los Angeles Galaxy.

The 33-year-old is expected to agree a loan deal shortly as he bids to maintain his fitness for England duty.

"AC Milan is one of the biggest clubs in the world," said Beckham.

"It doesn't mean I'm leaving the States - I'm still very committed to being a Galaxy player. I came to the Galaxy to win trophies and I want to do that."

The former England captain is one appearance short of matching Bobby Moore's 108-cap record for an outfield England player.

He has been warned by England boss Fabio Capello that any inactivity over the MLS off-season would result in his likely omission from the next squad.

"There is a chance this move could expose Beckham to a harsh reality "

Beckham said: "One of the reasons I want to train and play in Milan for a few months is the fact that the MLS season doesn't run as long as the European season and my body is programmed to actually not have that amount of time off.

"I've been lucky enough to play with one of the biggest clubs in England and one of the biggest clubs in Spain, now I'm being given the chance to play with one of the biggest clubs in Italy.

"They've got Kaka, Ronaldinho, Seedorf and also a player with one of the best records in football, in (Paolo) Maldini.

"To be on the pitch and the training field and get experience with those players is a big honour."

But Beckham insisted he was "committed" to the MLS.

"The MLS is in a great position at the moment. My hope for the season coming with the Galaxy is to win trophies. That is a big part of why I'm here," he said.

WHAT NEXT FOR BECKHAM?

Beckham signed a five-year contract with MLS in 2007 and is coming to the end of his second season in America, with the 2009 campaign due to kick off in March.

He is due to play for LA Galaxy - who had previously insisted he would not be able to move to another club on loan during their close season - in two exhibition matches in Australia and New Zealand in December.

But he could join Milan in January and would be eligible to play for them in Serie A and the Uefa Cup.

The possibility of Beckham spending time in Serie A has already been met with approval by a host of Milan stars, including Andriy Shevchenko and Filippo Inzaghi as well as the coach Carlo Ancelotti.

Ex-Chelsea forward Shevchenko said: "We would all be happy if he arrives."

His strike partner Inzaghi added: "I would really like it if Beckham came to give us a hand to win. He will certainly get a big welcome."

Ancelotti described his potential arrival as "very pleasing news".

"He is a serious lad, a professional and these are all positive signs. Beckham is a great football player and can play anywhere, in the middle or on the wing."
