Porto earn Uefa European reprieve

FC Porto

Porto will play in next season's Champions League after Uefa reversed its decision to ban the Portuguese champions from the competition.

The club was originally excluded over the alleged bribery of referees in the 2003/04 campaign.

Uefa's probe is ongoing, but any possible sanctions will only apply from the 2009/10 season.

The allegations relate to Porto's 2-0 win against Estrela da Amadora and their 0-0 draw with Beira Mar.

Uefa's disciplinary committee made the decision to overturn the ruling after new evidence came to light.

"They will be able to take part in the competition next season," said Uefa spokesman William Gaillard.

"Any sanctions brought against them by Uefa will apply from the following season."

Porto were found guilty by the Portuguese league in May of fixing the two league matches in question, which were part of the "Golden Whistle" investigation.

As a result Porto were fined £120,000 and docked six league points, but the punishment did not affect the final standings as Porto still won last season's title for the third time in a row, 14 points ahead of Sporting Lisbon.

After being banned from Europe's premier competition earlier this month Porto immediately appealed Uefa's decision.
