Stuttgart take Bundesliga title

Thomas Hitzlsperger celebrates his equaliser for Stuttgart Stuttgart captured the Bundesliga title for the fifth time in their history with a 2-1 win over Energie Cottbus.

They had a two-point lead before the final day and, despite going behind, ex-Aston Villa star Thomas Hitzlsperger and Sami Khedira sealed the victory.

Schalke, who were seeking a first title in 49 years, beat Arminia Bielefeld 2-1 but had to settle for second place.

Stuttgart, the Bundesliga's youngest team, earned the title thanks to an eighth straight league win.

And Stuttgart could clinch a double in the German Cup final against FC Nuremberg on May 26.

Bayern Munich thrashed relegated Mainz 5-2 but finished fourth, missing out on Champions League qualification.

Mainz and Alemannia Aachen will join Borussia Moenchengladbach in the Second Division for the next campaign.

Aachen, who were promoted last season, lost 4-0 at Hamburg SV.
