Cisse impresses on Ligue 1 return

Djibril Cisse Striker Djibril Cisse played his first game for Marseille after a six-month injury lay-off and created the winning goal in the 2-1 victory over Monaco.

Cisse, 25, who is on loan from Liverpool, broke his leg in France's last match before the World Cup and had not played since in a competitive game.

He came on as a second-half substitute and set up Mamamouda Niang to put Marseille 2-1 up in Saturday's match.

Cisse said: "It still isn't the Djibril that we all know, but it's satisfying."

His performance led to him receiving a standing ovation from the 53,000 home crowd at the Stade Velodrome.

"I received a great welcome from the exceptional fans"

"I am very happy, I thought I was only going to get 15 to 20 minutes," added Cisse.

"It is a dream come true to play for Marseille. I played in front of my mother, my wife, my friends.

"I received a great welcome from the exceptional fans. I was like a little boy starting at a new club."

Saturday's win was only Marseille's second success in nine league outings.

Mickael Pagis headed home a cross from Taye Taiwo in the 32nd to put Marseille ahead before Marco di Vaio equalised just before Cisse's introduction.

Marseille are fifth in the standings, while Monaco suffered their first defeat in six matches to slip to 16th - a point above the relegation zone.

Cisse joined Marseille on a season-long loan in July, with an option to make the deal permanent.

Liverpool signed Cisse from Auxerre for a record club transfer fee of £14m in July 2004.
