Kuhn rueful over missed chances

Switzerland boss Kobi Kuhn believes his side's failure to take their chances were behind their Euro 2008 elimination after a 2-1 defeat by Turkey.

"It's a very, very big disappointment," said Kuhn. "That hurts.

"The whole country is probably as disappointed as the team. You hope for so much and go out. At the end of the day we did not have enough.

"We didn't take our chances. But there is no blame on the team. They did everything they could."

Switzerland took the lead against Turkey but lost after Semih Senturk equalised and Arda Turan scored with a deflected shot in injury-time.

The Euro 2008 co-hosts will also regret their opening game against the Czech Republic when they put in a promising performance and hit the bar only to lose 1-0.

"We just didn't have enough good fortune," added Kuhn.

What do you make of Switzerland's demise?

Switzerland became only the second European Championship host to be knocked out before the last four.

Euro 2000 co-host Belgium failed to get through the group stage when they held the tournament with Holland.

"That's football," said Kuhn "But the existence of Switzerland will probably not be endangered by getting knocked out.

"We'll wrap up the tournament in good fashion against Portugal on Sunday and then for me it'll be time to put my feet up."

Swiss midfielder Tranquillo Barnetta was also left rueing the side's missed chances as the cost of defeat sunk in.

"It's hard to know what to say because I thought even in the second half we didn't play badly," said Barnetta.

"We had lots of chances, they had three chances and scored twice. It's very difficult to accept but that's it, it's over."

Co-hosts' striker Eren Derdiyok set up Hakan Yakin for the Swiss goal and gave an insight into the sombre mood within the Swiss camp after the Turkey game.

"In the changing room after the game it was very quiet," he said. "We're all very disappointed.

"From two half-chances they scored twice. Of course that's really bitter."
