Donadoni finalises Italian squad

The Italy squad

Italy coach Roberto Donadoni has named his final squad for Euro 2008.

Donadoni left out Fiorentina midfielder Riccardo Montolivo, 23, as he trimmed his party to 23 men and he is now set to feature in Italy's Olympic squad.

Veteran Juventus attacker Alessandro Del Piero, 33, makes the cut despite being dropped from recent friendlies.

Sampdoria striker Antonio Cassano, 25, has also made Donadoni's final party despite struggling recently with his form and temperament.

Donadoni renewed his contract for two more years on 20 May - but could still lose his job if his side perform poorly at Euro 2008.

Italian soccer federation president Giancarlo Abete has revealed Donadoni's new deal includes a reciprocal escape clause.

The clause can be put into effect within 10 days after Italy's participation in Euro 2008 ends.

Donadoni's squad includes 14 players who were involved in Italy's World Cup-winning squad in Germany two years ago.

Juventus striker Vincenzo Iaquinta and AC Milan defender Massimo Oddo missed the cut through injury, while Genoa's Marco Borriello was preferred up front to AC Milan's veteran striker Filippo Inzaghi, 34.

Donadoni added: "For Pippo Inzaghi, age didn't come into it. It was a technical choice. I'm disappointed for Oddo but his injury has been determined."

In a statement published on the Milan website, Inzaghi, who has scored 25 goals in 57 appearances for Italy, said: "I'm disappointed, above all on a human level.

"At the start, there was a positive, frank and direct rapport with the coach. I thought I'd demonstrated my loyalty, whether it be by travelling for games without playing, or by scoring two goals last year against the Faroe Islands in a qualification game worth three points like all the others.

"Then, there's been silence, notwithstanding my performances with Milan on all continents and the 18 goals scored from winter to April-May."

Italy are at a training camp in Coverciano and will host Belgium in their final warm-up game on Friday.
