Bruckner buoyed by Czech display

Czech Republic coach Karel Bruckner was pleased with his side's performance despite their 3-1 defeat to Portugal in their second Group A game at Euro 2008.

The Czechs opened the tournament with a 1-0 win against Switzerland on Saturday but Bruckner was more content with their display against Portugal.

"We had more chances to score than in the first match," said the 68-year-old.

"There were serious problems in attack in the first match and that was not the case in this match."

Bruckner made two changes to his starting line-up, replacing Jan Koller with Milan Baros and Marek Matejovsky with David Jarolim, and they appeared to pay off.

The Czech Republic displayed greater cohesion and urgency than against Switzerland and despite falling behind to Deco's goal, swiftly equalised through Libor Sionko.

Portugal eventually wore down their resistance and Cristiano Ronaldo's strike saw them regain the lead before Ricardo Quaresma completed the win late on.

Who are you tipping to qualify from Group A?

"I made two changes and I think they played pretty well," said Bruckner. "Some players fared better than against Switzerland.

"In the first half, we proved we are a good team. We know how to play in defence and in attack."

Bruckner reserved special praise for Jaroslav Plasil, Baros and Matejovsky.

"Plasil was excellent and Baros also proved he is a high-quality player," he said.

"Matejovsky played well in the first half and had enough strength in the first half.

"In the second half, we saw the team get a bit tired and our opponents put in a perfect performance in attack.

"They did not go for counter-attacking only - they were able to make perfect transitions from attack to defence."

The Czechs play Turkey in their final group match and Bruckner is confident they can still progress to the quarter-finals, adding: "Portugal played very well but it's not over for us.

"We still have the third match and we are ready for that."
