Bolton 2-1 Newcastle

Newcastle centre-back Peter Ramage heads past his own keeper Pavel Srnicek to gift Bolton an equaliser Striker Nicolas Anelka grabbed the winner as he helped Bolton come back from a goal down to beat Newcastle.

Kieron Dyer drove in an angled shot after a mistake by Kevin Davies to put the visitors into a deserved lead.

But a mix-up in the Magpies defence saw Peter Ramage head past keeper Pavel Srnicek and into his own net and gift Bolton an unlikely lifeline.

The home side then took control of the game and Anelka slotted in at the far post to secure victory.

The outcome was in stark contrast to the start of the match when the confidence and energy oozing through the Magpies side, who have won five of their six last league games, was clear to see.

They snapped and snarled at the heels of Bolton's players and James Milner sent a 25-yard free-kick just wide of the angle and it was not long before Newcastle were rewarded with a goal.

Davies missed the ball as he attempted to chest it down just outside the home area and Dyer seized on the mistake.

He used his pace to get in front of defender Tal Ben Haim and he sped towards goal before driving a shot past keeper Jussi Jaaskalainen.

Another mistake in the Bolton defence almost saw Abdoulaye Faye's poor touch punished when Obafemi Martins pounced only to send his shot across goal just wide.

Milner went close twice in quick succession before a mix up at the back saw Newcastle's good work undone.

A looped header into the Newcastle box by Gary Speed caused confusion between Ramage and keeper Srnicek and, as they raced towards each other, the centre-back ended up heading into his own net.

The goal gave Bolton fresh impetus after the break and they began to dominate before Anelka scored his fourth goal in as many games.

A long throw-in into the Newcastle box was headed on by Davies and Diouf sidefooted to the far post where Anelka rushed in to slot in a shot.

Emre sent a dipping shot just over and Scott Parker forced Jaaskalainen into a late sprawling save but Bolton held out for a fourth successive win.

  • Bolton manager Sam Allardyce on Nicolas Anelka:

  • "We're reaping the rewards of a goalscorer at long last.

"We have not seen that type of goal from him yet. We have seen a lot of quality runs and skill and finishing.

"Today we saw a goalscorer's goal when he popped up at the far post and tapped it in. It was a great victory having gone 1-0 down."

  • Newcastle manager Glenn Roeder:

  • "It is stating the obvious, but the two goals we conceded were, by our standards of late, shockers. They were two woeful goals.

"Kevin Nolan pushed Peter Ramage in the back for the first one, but you cannot expect referees to see everything.

"To concede that goal after the first half-hour playing so well, was a huge disappointment."
