Man City see off Leeds

Manchester City 2-1 Leeds United

Shaun Goater and Niclas Jensen scored as Manchester City brushed aside the disappointment of their FA Cup exit with a deserved win over Leeds.

Harry Kewell did manage to give the visitors a consolation goal in injury time but it would have been tough on City had they not won the game.

Kevin Keegan's team fully deserved three points against a Leeds team that lacked the fizz and determination that brought about their recent upturn in form.

KEY MOMENTS

  • 28 mins: Schmeichel brilliantly denies Kewell
  • 29 mins: Goater opens the scoring
  • 50 mins: Jensen spectacularly doubles City's lead
  • The Manchester club have been strongly linked with a move for Robbie Fowler and, intriguingly, the Leeds striker was left on the bench for the match.

And when he was introduced with 20 minutes left the City fans cheered and chanted his name in anticipation of his possible arrival.

Leeds started the match well and after an early scare from Anelka, would have opened the scoring but for a brilliant save from Peter Schmeichel.

The Danish goalkeeper managed to change direction mid-dive to swat Kewell's shot away from goal, after the ball took a massive deflection off a City defender.

    " It was a magical goal "
    Terry Venables on Jensen's strike

Jason Wilcox should have scored with the rebound but guided his header straight into Schmeichel's arms.

Inspired by Schmeichel's brilliance, City soon took the lead.

Goater - making his first start in four games - latched onto Eyal Berkovic's slide-rule pass and placed the ball past Robinson with his first touch.

Marc-Vivien Foe almost doubled his team's lead shortly before the break but, after making a late surge into the penalty area, he headed narrowly wide.

Foe missed his second by inches, with a second-half shot from the edge of the area, before Jensen scored.

" Some of our one touch passing at times was outstanding "
    Kevin Keegan

Anelka drilled a 40-yard cross from the right which Jensen met superbly and volleyed past Robinson.

Leeds tried to mount a comeback, with Venables introducing young James Milner and Fowler.

But City continued to create chances and Kevin Horlock forced a sensational fingertip save from Robinson with an 18-yard drive.

Jonathan Woodgate found Kewell in injury time and the Australian drilled the ball home from 18 yards, but it came too late to save Leeds.
