A goal from Darren Ambrose gave Crystal Palace victory and left Middlesbrough's Gordon Strachan still without a goal or point since his arrival as manager.
Boro gave debuts to loanees Marcus Bent and Isaiah Osbourne but Bent was guilty of a glaring miss when he fired woefully wide when in front of goal.
After Leroy Lita squandered another chance for Boro, Neil Danns nodded on to Ambrose who sidefooted Palace ahead.
Julian Speroni kept out Gary O'Neil and Jonathan Franks as Boro were denied.
Crystal Palace manager Neil Warnock:
"I was so pleased it fell to him (Darren Ambrose).
"It's not my fault someone gave him away. I bid £1.5m for him once - that's how much I rate him.
"He needs a certain type of manager and we make a good pairing.
"But I think we had 11 stars out there today."
Middlesbrough boss Gordon Strachan:
"When you have chances like that and you don't take them you have a problem, luck has nothing to do with it.
"It's frustrating, just like last week against Plymouth when our best player, Adam Johnson, missed a penalty.
"It's frustrating for me, it's frustrating for the players who work so hard and it's frustrating for the fans."
