Watford 1-0 Charlton

Tommy Smith's fierce strike gave Watford victory over 10-man Charlton.

Tamas Priskin went close before Smith latched on to Priskin's knockdown and drilled in a low shot to fire the Hornets ahead on the half-volley.

Addicks left-back Kelly Youga was sent off in first-half stoppage time for a crude foul on Priskin and the home side eased to victory in a dull second half.

Lee Williamson did threaten with a looping shot for the home side but Charlton posed few problems.

Watford manager Aidy Boothroyd:
"It was a fair result. I thought, and I always do think, it's a very difficult game against Charlton.

"We've had a lot of score draws and no score draws against them but I felt we had the edge today.

"The sending-off obviously affected the game but I think we were well worth our win."

Charlton manager Alan Pardew on Kelly Youga's red card:
"I thought it was harsh. He's bundled him over and into the box.

"You're obviously taking a risk if it is a foul and I think Kelly should get the benefit of the doubt until I've seen it again.

"But it obviously changed the game in terms of making it very difficult for us.

"I don't think we started the game particularly well but we were getting into the game and that stopped us in our tracks to some degree.

"But in the second half I really felt we had a go, we had a couple of half-chances and really had to work hard but I'm very disappointed to have lost that game."
