Charlton 1-1 Scunthorpe

Marcus Bent Charlton were held to a draw by Scunthorpe as they faltered at the start of their attempt to make am immediate return to the Premier League.

Despite creating a host of chances and applying almost constant pressure, it took Charlton 62 minutes to score.

Marcus Bent slotted in from six yards after Yassin Moutaouakil's cross had broken to him via a deflection.

But Scunthorpe centre-back Izzy Iriekpen headed in on his debut to earn his side a share of the points.

  • Charlton boss Alan Pardew:
"I thought our performance level was high but there were a couple of moments, particularly defensively, where we could have done better.

"It is a new team and we need to learn how to win games, but there are still a lot of positives.

"There's a long way to go. We have to react well to this disappointment."

  • Scunthorpe boss Nigel Adkins:
"To say I'm delighted is an understatement. A few years ago we were staring into the abyss of the Conference and we've turned it around.

"It's a big step up and has taken us 43 years. We are clear favourites to get relegated, and Charlton were clear favourites to win this game.

"But it just goes to show on any given day that anything is possible."
